Welcome

Dr. Schola Matovu

I am Dr. Schola Matovu, a gerontological nurse scientist, an Assistant Professor, the Director of Global Learning and Engagement at the University of Utah College of Nursing, and the Executive Director of the Nurse-to-Nurse Global Initiative.

My Story:

My Formative Influences: Shaped by Jjajja’s Love

My personal and scholarly journey is deeply inspired by my Jjajja (grandmother), who raised me during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in rural Uganda. Amid poverty and limited access to health care, I witnessed her serve as an informal village nurse—delivering babies, providing herbal remedies, and caring for families with compassion and courage. Though she could neither read nor write, she modeled resilience, leadership, and service.

My Journey in Nursing and Research:

Inspired by my Lived Experience and Stellar Mentorship

From nursing school to bedside care and ultimately to nurse scientist, my journey has been profoundly shaped by lived experiences and stellar mentors. These influences fuel my dedication to research innovation that enhances health and wellbeing, particularly for older adults with caregiving responsibilities
